This week was really educational and definitely full of things I've never experienced before. The most exciting day was Tuesday when we spent the entire day from morning to night out on the RV Weatherbird. The trip started out rough as most of us were sea sick in some way but ended up being a great experience at the end of the day. We saw tons of interesting invertebrates like mantis shrimp, box crabs, face sponges, and sea urchins. The coolest vertebrate we saw was the scrawled cowfish as it was pretty big and came up in the dredge instead of the trawl. I also loved Thursday at the Florida Aquarium as we got to freely walk around and see so many cool animals. I got to see Balloon Porcupinefish which was by far one of the highlights of the week. The rest of the week we lectured in the classroom and learned about deep and open ocean research, diversity, and plankton. We also did some cool activities like pretending to be bioluminescent plankton, identifying preserved specimens, and identifying shells. Overall it was a great week that was very educational and exciting.
